Clinic and Its Departments

In the IHBT we are engaged in diagnostics and treatment of patients with serious hematopoietic disorders, in particular acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative syndromes, congenital and acquired coagulation or platelets disorders, as well as certain types of anemia. Bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplants are also crucial activities.

The care provided in the Clinical Division requires a complex approach. This approach is used by a team of experienced physicians, nurses and other medium- and lower-level medical staff members. At the same time, care is also provided by other experts: physiotherapists, a nutrition therapist, a social nurse, clinical pharmacologists or a clinical psychologist.

The departments meet the strictest parameters necessary for the care of all types of hematological patients. The staff members of the Clinical Division not only provide highly specialized care, but they also pay attention to quality and safety both for patients and personnel. For that reason the IHBT holds a number of accreditations.

Key programs of the Clinical Division

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, predominantly from unrelated donors following both standard and reduced intensity conditioning regimens. This program has undergone a significant development in recent years and the IHBT performs the largest number of these challenging procedures in the Czech Republic.

Hematological intensive care, including artificial pulmonary ventilation and extracorporeal elimination methods; apart from the IHBT’s own specialists, this care is provided by consultants from the other medical fields).

Treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia according to both international and national protocols.

Care of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), rare types of anemia and myeloproliferative syndromes. The naming of the IHBT a European Centre of Excellence reflects the quality of diagnostic and therapeutic care provided to MDS patients.

Treatment of patients with chronic myeloid and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Program for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with and congenital bleeding disorders, and thrombophilia conditions. Care of these patients is provided within the Clinical Division by the Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis. Apart from routine medical care, the personnel of this part of the Clinical Division deal with carrier testing and prenatal diagnosis of hemophilia. This department also comprises the National Reference Laboratory for Coagulation and a reference centre for certain DNA-based methods which cooperates closely with the Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

Scientific projects and research, including the involvement in grant projects and studies, represent important activities of all the departments of the Clinical Division.

Rare diseases. In the framework of the care of rare diseases development program, the IHBT obtained a grant from the Ministry of Health for the creation of the Red Blood System Rare Diseases Registry.
