Blood Stem Cell Donation

Information for hematopoietic cell donors - Apheresis Department

Hematopoietic cell donation

Haematopoietic cells are cells that are used to perform a transplant. This method is used in the treatment of life-threatening hematological diseases (leukemia, lymphomas, some types of anemia), immune and metabolic disorders. Donated haematopoietic cells are able to restore haematopoietic and immune functions in the recipient

Hematopoietic cell collection can be done in two ways:

A) Peripheral hematopoietic cell collection - see more at Donation Information.

B) Bone marrow collection - more on Donation Information

  • A healthy body can cope with both types of hematopoietic cell collection by natural regeneration , donors may experience fatigue for a few days as with a cold or flu, major complications are very rare, donors are monitored at regular intervals after collection (one week after collection, 6 and 12 months after collection and then once a year for 10 years after donation).
  • Anyone interested in donating haematopoietic cells is free to refuse donation at any time. However, if in doubt, it is better not to join the register. A patient awaiting a transplant is usually in a serious condition and any delay or complications may put them at risk. The donor can consult the staff of the Apheresis Department or the Czech Hematopoietic Cell Donor Registry by telephone about temporary or permanent causes of ineligibility for collection.
  • the donor is entitled to paid leave with full payment of up to 96 hours of wages in accordance with the provisions of ( active reference § 203 (2) (d) and (e) of Act No. 262/2006 Coll., Labour Code)
