Laboratory for diagnosis of rare red blood cell disorders

The laboratory for diagnosis of rare red blood cell disorders is a part of the Complement of the laboratories of the IHBT. It continuously advocates an independent and impartial assessment of the professional competence of the Complement of Laboratories according to the ČSN EN ISO 15189 standard, the application of which is verified by the Czech Institute for Accreditation. The test methods within the scope of accreditation are defined by the Annex to the Certificate of Accreditation in the current version, which is available on the IHBT website.

The laboratory serves for the diagnosis of congenital corpuscular anaemias (erythrocyte membrane disorders, red blood cell enzymopathies, hemoglobinopathies, inherited bone marrow failure) as well as for acquired red blood cell disorders (myelodysplastic syndromes, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria).

The laboratory equipment involves capillary electrophoresis, which significantly sensitizes and refines the diagnosis of abnormal hemoglobins and thalassemias. Currently, the laboratory is working on the introduction of measurement of red blood cell deformability using ectacytometry, This method contributes to more exact diagnosis of congenital erythrocyte membrane disorders.

The laboratory colaborates with the Department of Genomics of the IHBT in the diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies and other rare red blood cell disorders, as well as  with the laboratory of biochemistry of the Institute of Biology of Palacký University in Olomouc and with the Clinic of Paediatric Haematology and Paediatric Oncology of the University Hospital in Prague – Motol.

The staff is bound by confidentiality according to the Health Services Act, 372/2011 Coll.
