Therapeutic Apheresis

The Apheresis Department provides apheresis blood collection and therapeutic services with the help of blood components separators.

Hemapheresis (apheresis) is a technique performed with the help of blood components separators that usually use the centrifugal principle. Blood components are separated on the basis of their specific weight. During the procedure, blood is first withdrawn from the donor/patient to be mixed with anticoagulant solution, and then it enters the machine where the separated component is collected. The remaining components are returned to the circulation of the donor/patient.

Donor hemapheresis is a procedure that serves for the preparation of a large dose or a large volume of blood components, e.g. platelets or plasma.

Therapeutic hemapheresis is a medical procedure aimed at reducing multiplied blood elements in the patient’s circulation, or lowering the contents of pathogenetically active components in plasma.
