CAN.HEAL project (EU4Health)
Building the EU Cancer and Health Genomics Platform (CAN.HEAL) project - EU4Health
Short summary of the project
The European Cancer Plan (ECCP) aims to address the entire cancer disease course - from prevention to quality of life for cancer patients and survivors - with the aim of improving prevention, early detection, access to diagnosis and treatment.
The CAN.HEAL consortium will address two EBCP initiatives: 'Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment for All' and 'Genomics for Public Health'. Genomics is becoming increasingly important in cancer medicine. Next-generation sequencing technologies and analytical approaches are now being introduced into clinical practice with many clinical applications ranging from identifying individual targeted genetic changes to monitoring response to treatment. As part of the CAN.HEAL consortium, organisations from 17 EU countries will work together to build on ongoing studies to promote the use of genomics to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients, as well as to better understand individual susceptibility to developing a particular type of cancer. Ethical and legal issues will be addressed and efforts will be made to train and educate health professionals, patients and the public about the importance of genomics.
The ultimate goal of the project is to develop recommendations for initiatives within the EU health system that will further improve access for individuals and patients to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment through personalised medicine.
