Department of Molecular Genetics
The main mission of our laboratory is to provide regular molecular monitoring of the minimal residual disease (MRD) in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) , and the detection of mutations in the kinase domain of BCR-ABL that are one of the mechanisms of resistance to the treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Furthermore, we co-operate with laboratories in other countries on the standardization of the monitoring of MRD and participate in several clinical trials.
Our research is aimed at improving the molecular diagnostics of CML for clinical practice (e.g. detection of MRD and detection of resistant mutations). We have been striving to enhance our understanding of, and to detect in time, with clinical relevance, the resistance to the treatment (in vitro and in vivo research). Our research projects also focus on other molecular mechanisms of the disease (e.g. the role of microRNA and transcription factors, CML stem cell). Physicians, nurses as well as data managers from the Clinical Department, headed by Dr. Hana Klamová, are an integral part of our team.
