Intensive Care and Transplantation

The transplant activity began in the IHBT in 1986 when allogeneic transplants from related donors started to be performed. The year 1990 saw the launching of a program of autologous bone marrow transplants and the year 1993 a program of autologous peripheral stem cell transplants. The year 1995 witnessed the launching of a program of transplants from unrelated donors and the year 1999 a program of the so-called non-myeloablative transplants.

The IHBT transplant team is a member of the IBMTR (International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry) since 1991, a member of the EBMT (European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation) since 1994, and in the framework of the EBMT it was accredited in 1995 for performing transplants from unrelated donors with the right to request bone marrow from donor centres the world over, including the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program). Thank to this and together with the introduction of more painstaking techniques of HLA typing tests and the improvement of supportive care, the numbers of transplants from unrelated donors started to increase and they are currently higher than the numbers of transplants from siblings.

The Hematological ICU comprises six single and two double rooms. The Transplant Unit has five single rooms.
