Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology of Viruses

The main aim of the laboratory is to contribute to the elucidation of the role of viruses in the development of human diseases, mainly cancer. Viral infections are detected using molecular-biological methods and assessment of viral-specific antibodies presence. The research is focused on the causal link of human papillomaviruses and malignant diseases of anogenital tract and a part of head and neck cancer cases, as well as the follow-up of markers of broad spectrum of human polyomaviruses in various diagnoses.

For the detection of the serological response we prepare antigens derived from proteins of individual viruses using recombinant technologies. Virus-specific antibodies elicited during natural infection are detected by means of virus-like particles based on capsid proteins. Other recombinant antigens are prepared as glutathione-S-transferase bound papillomavirus oncoproteins.

In cooperation with the Prague Voice Centre the laboratory is responsible for a 5-year clinical study IIIb to ascertain the effect of quadrivalent HPV vaccine in patients suffering from the recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis, caused exclusively by HPV 6 and HPV11 antibodies included in the vaccine. Vaccination might extend the intervals between individual recurrences or prevent them.
